Your Fertility Preservation Introduction

We will begin your consultation with an educational telehealth appointment with one of our male fertility specialists. You’ll gain fertility insights and personalized counseling that will help address your preservation needs. During your introduction, we will:

• Gain an understanding of what your gender-affirming care entails (e.g., tucking, medical hormonal therapy, surgical treatments, etc.)
• Discuss evidence-based research on the real impacts that gender-affirming care can have on your future fertility
• Break down the specifics of our semen analysis process and establish expectations for freezing your sperm
• Outline your available options on how to use your frozen sperm (e.g., IUI, IVF, donor eggs, surrogacy, etc.)

Sample Collection, Evaluation, and Testing

After your introduction, we will mail you an at-home semen collection kit. Simply follow the easy instructions to complete your sample and return it.

We’ll have your sample sent to a renowned academic university and CLIA-certified andrology laboratory. At that lab, your sample will undergo a semen sustainability evaluation, which is also called a “freeze-thaw” test. This evaluation allows us to understand how your sperm will survive in freezing conditions and if it will survive the thawing process. This process determines the future usability of your sperm. At our partnering lab, additional infectious disease testing will be conducted, which is recommended by the FDA and required by fertility clinics for future use of the sperm.

Your Fertility Preservation Review

The final step of your fertility preservation consultation in Dallas will be a follow-up telehealth appointment with your assigned male fertility specialist. During this call, we’ll share your semen analysis results and recommend the most appropriate next steps for you as you continue with your gender affirming care plan. We will also communicate the results to your other provider(s) of choice.

Your follow-up fertility preservation appointment will include:

• A comprehensive review of your semen analysis and our professional interpretations of your results.
  • If your semen analysis results are abnormal, we will discuss potential underlying causes and develop a custom male fertility treatment plan for you.
• An in-depth review of your freeze-thaw results.
  • Your freeze-thaw test will also provide data on whether your sperm quantity is sufficient for conception. If not, it may be necessary to freeze additional samples.
• A personalized outline of your overall fertility preservation plan to help you achieve your long-term goals.
• Follow-up recommendations as you proceed through your gender-affirming care in Dallas.
