When you first learn that you may need to see a male fertility specialist or male reproductive specialist, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed both emotionally and financially.
At Posterity Health, our male fertility experts walk you through every step, from your initial male fertility workup and male fertility screening to treatment plans and beyond. As a leading male fertility clinic, we are in-network with most major insurance providers and all Fertility Benefit Managers, including Progyny, Maven, WINFertility, Kindbody and Carrot. We believe the cost of care should never stand between you and your family building goals.
You are not alone in having questions about paying for male infertility treatment. Here are the most common financial questions we hear from patients on this path to parenthood.
1. Does insurance ever cover sperm extraction procedures?
As a male fertility clinic in network with most major insurance providers, Posterity Health works to make care as accessible as possible. Coverage can vary between locations and your specific plan. Calling your specific insurance provider to ask about coverage for male infertility treatment is a great first step to understanding your financial coverage. Our care team will also be fully transparent about any financial responsibility before every appointment and procedure.
Posterity Health is also one of the few male reproductive practices covered by Fertility Benefit Mangers such as Progyny, Maven, Carrot, Kindbody, and WINFertility. These are additional fertility specific benefits that your employer may already provide. In some cases, such as with Maven, Posterity Health is the only in-network male reproductive urologist available.
2. Can I delay my fertility start time to wait to be financially ready?
In most cases, a short delay does not have a significant long-term impact on treatment, especially if waiting allows your family to feel more financially prepared. That said, the right timeline will depend on your and your partner’s specific treatment needs. Your male infertility specialist will help you understand whether timing is a critical factor in your unique situation.
3. What are other ways to help pay for sperm extraction procedures?
If your insurance does not partially or fully cover your procedure, Posterity Health is partnered with CapexMD who specializes in male fertility and fertility financing broadly. CapexMD offers flexible options that can be used by both partners to help cover the cost of fertility treatments. Check out their website to learn more about available plans and how it all works.
4. Can I use my FSA or HSA to pay for sperm extraction procedures?
Yes, both FSA (Flexible Spending Account) and HSA (Health Savings Account) funds can be applied toward your care at Posterity Health, making it easier to manage out-of-pocket costs for male fertility treatment.
5. Why does the cost differ between different sperm extraction procedures?
Posterity Health’s fellowship trained urologists are among the most specialized male reproductive doctors in the country. Their advanced surgical training allows them to perform the full range of sperm extraction procedures, including PESA, TESE, and microTESE surgeries giving patients the best possible chance for retrieving viable sperm.
Each procedure varies in complexity, required equipment, procedure time, and support staff needed, which is why costs differ. Your care team will recommend the approach that is best suited to your situation and explain all associated costs clearly before moving forward.
6. Are anesthesia and fertility center costs calculated into the final bill?
In most major medical settings, each provider bills separately. This means you may receive individual bills from the surgical facility (or fertility clinic if this is where your procedure takes place), anesthesia provider, and Posterity Health. In some cases, such as using a Fertility Benefit Manager, all fees may be covered under the same plan. For insurance or cash-pay patients, each billing team will connect with you ahead of time so there are no unexpected charges.
7. What happens if viable sperm isn’t located during the procedure?
Male factor infertility is complex and can range in causes, including sperm count issues, poor sperm motility, or unknown factors. Unfortunately, no procedure comes with a guarantee, and outcomes will vary based on the individual.
Your reproductive urologist will be open and honest with you about your chances of success and any alternative options before your procedure. Posterity Health works closely with the fertility clinic’s care and embryology teams to create the strongest possible foundation for success. If a procedure does not retrieve viable sperm, your provider will meet with you afterward to discuss next steps and revise a plan.
8. If we plan to do multiple IVF cycles, will we need multiple sperm extraction procedures?
Not necessarily. Posterity Health’s fellowship trained urologists understand that many patients will require multiple rounds of IVF cycles to achieve pregnancy. When possible, your urologist will extract multiple sperm samples during a single procedure that can be stored and used across multiple rounds of IVF. Sperm can be used fresh as part of an immediate treatment plan, or frozen for future use, reducing the need for repeat procedures and additional costs.
